The Canta Libre Chamber Ensemble will perform in the Vanderbilt Museum’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium on Saturday September 22, 2018 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Canta Libre (www.cantalibre.org) is an ensemble of harp, flute and three strings. The quintet’s founder and director, flutist Sally Shorrock, said, “This combination of instruments was extremely popular with French composers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We specialize in this ravishing repertoire that brings the music and cultural atmosphere of turn-of-the-century Paris to audiences of the twenty-first century.”
BBC Music Magazine says Canta Libre’s music is “…vivacious and youthful…beautifully nuanced.”
Shorrock founded Canta Libre in 2002 to foster the performance and enjoyment of music written specifically for flute, harp and strings. The ensemble’s musicians are considered experts in this ephemeral, rare style of chamber music.
The ensemble performs music of the Classical and Baroque periods and actively commissions and supports living composers, ensuring the evolution of this unique repertoire for generations to come.
Canta Libre was featured recently at Lincoln Center, at the American Harp Society 50th Anniversary National Conference. The ensemble also has appeared at numerous regional venues, including at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, on WNYC Radio at The Green Space, The Music Festival of the Hamptons, Bargemusic, WLIW TV, National Public Radio of Long Island, Brooklyn Public Library, and at colleges, music festivals, libraries, community centers and historic sites throughout Connecticut, Westchester County and Long Island.
