New Hearing Loop in Town Board Room

Huntington Listens to Those Who Can’t Hear

New hearing loop in Town Board room improves audio clarity for those with hearing aids and cochlear implants

Persons with hearing loss should find it a little easier to follow the proceedings in the Town Board Room at Huntington Town Hall, thanks to the installation of a hearing loop that works with hearing aids and cochlear implants to improve the clarity of sound emanating from the room’s audio system.

Huntington is the only Suffolk County town to have such a system, which has been installed at places such as the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Botanical Garden and the city’s two baseball stadiums, Yankee Stadium and Citi Field.

“We invite everyone to attend our public meetings, and we feel it is important that those who do come can follow the proceedings without struggling to understand what is being said. This loop helps bring government closer to residents with hearing loss and allows them to be part of the process,” Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said.

The system, which cost $8,000, was installed last November by North East Hearing of Miller Place. Installation entailed placing a copper wire in the floor throughout the room. The wire is connected to a control box and existing audiovisual equipment; the wireless technology magnetically transfers a microphone or television sound signal to the receivers in hearing aids or cochlear implants, improving cochlearquality. For those without either hearing instrument who need assistance, headphones attached to a lanyard are available (the headphones are sanitized after each use).

The system was installed after meetings with Halesite resident Len Urban, who frequently attended sessions held in the room – including the Town Board, Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals – but was frustrated by his inability to understand what the board members were saying, even after getting a cochlear implant in 2013. Urban met with Town officials and shared research he had done into various systems. Urban also pointed out that a loop system was preferable to a headset system, which the Town had been considering. “A person with a bulky headset would stand out in a crowd and, therefore, many in need would not use them. A loop system required the push of a button with no fuss or embarrassment,” Urban wrote in a recent newsletter of the Hearing Loss Association of America’s North Shore chapter.

Urban wrote about being invited to Town Hall for a demonstration of the newly-installed system. He was asked how things sounded. “I couldn’t answer because of the large lump in my throat,” he said in the article, “so I gave a thumbs-up and signed, THANK YOU.”

Today, in Albany, Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci and his Republican colleagues released an extensive list of recommended solutions to help curb New York State’s growing heroin epidemic. ‘The Heroin Epidemic – A Report on Heroin Use, Treatment, Prevention & Education Efforts in NYS’ was crafted after months of input from law enforcement, health care providers, recovering addicts, and those who lost loved ones from across New York.

“Too many families on Long Island have fallen victim to addiction and tragedy,” said Lupinacci. “In HEROINEPIC2recent years, heroin has swept into our schools and homes. It’s time we take a stand against this epidemic. With recommendations from experts, our Heroin Task Force has created a very ambitious strategy to provide our communities with the resources they need to help those who need it most. I’m confident in the recommendations, and I know that this report will lay the groundwork in the continued fight against drugs and addiction.”

break4robbersSuffolk County Police have arrested several people for multiple bank and gas station robberies that occurred in Suffolk County since last December.

A man entered the Shell gas station, located at 444 Commack Rd., Commack, on January 22, at approximately 7 p.m. After making a purchase, the man pointed towards his waistband indicating he had a weapon. He then made a verbal demand for cash. When the clerk failed to comply, the man fled without proceeds into a waiting vehicle.

A Good Samaritan followed the vehicle for a short distance and gave an accurate description to the police. Patrol officers saw a vehicle that matched the description and initiated a traffic stop. After an investigation, the officer arrested Shabril Maxwell, Stacey Beck and Douglas McKeefery. Maxwell had been a person of interest in several of the bank and gas station robberies.

Town’s biggest zoning change ever, move to allow renting basement apartments -Letter to the Editor

$

0

This Monday night, February 8, 2016 at a 7 PM Hearing at Town Hall, the Town is poised to allow for the first time, all single family homeowners to legally rent basement apartments. This will be the biggest zoning change in the history of the Town, yet no Public Hearings have been held.  Why? Because, it’s being done in quiet by the unelected Huntington Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) who have unilaterally decided to legalize basement apartments.

Who the heck is the ZBA to make such an enormous zoning change effectively doubling the number of dwellings in our Town? We did not elect the ZBA, we elect our Town Board members. If the elected Town Board members want to be the first municipality to allow for basement apartment rentals (and face the voters) that is their call.  But not the ZBA. Heck even “progressive” NYC Mayor,  Bill de Blasio’s Administration, doesn’t allow for basement cellar apartments in NYC.

Although the quality of life impact will be huge with increased traffic, garbage, and overcrowded schools, the financial impact will be worse. Landlords of these basement apartments will pay no increased taxes.  Schools facing more students, with no tax revenue, will be forced under the NYS tax cap to gut programs and services.

If you are outraged about this, please call Frank Petrone at 351-3030 or email him at fpetrone@huntingtonny.gov, and tell him to stop the ZBA, and enforce the Town’s zoning law, 198-134-(6)* banning basement apartments.

Rich McGrath

A NEW GUIDEBOOK, “HOW TO PLAN FOR AGING PARENTS 2016”

TULLY & WINKELMAN, P.C. RELEASES NEW GUIDEBOOK,
“HOW TO PLAN FOR AGING PARENTS 2016”
Report Available to the Public Free of Charge at Law Firm’s Website

Tully & Winkelman, P.C. has released a new guidebook, which provides valuable information for adults on how they can plan for their elderly parents as they age.

“How To Plan For Aging Parents 2016” addresses crucial topics to make sure the elderly are able to afford the quality life care they deserve. Topics include the cost of long-term care; life care planning; Medicare; Medicaid; planning for long-term care; potential Medicaid recovery issues; and the future of long-term care. This report is available free of charge and can be downloaded at www.elderlaw.pro.

According to the firm, the cost of nursing home care on Long Island runs from approximately $115,000 eldercareto more than $200,000 a year, or approximately $312 to $612 daily. “Studies show that approximately two out of every five people reaching age 65 will need some type of long-term healthcare,” Brian Andrew Tully, Founding Partner, Tully & Winkelman, P.C., said. “You are likely one of the many people who would prefer to stay at home, no matter what the cost, but without the proper planning, it may leave you with few alternatives.”

The guidebook also introduces the concept of Life Care Planning, a new specialty of elder law emerging around the country. While traditional elder law or Medicaid planning law firms focus on saving the elder’s money for the next generation, Life Care Planning law firms use the elder’s money and government benefits to maximize his or her quality of life and independence. Life Care Planning helps people find and pay for good care by bundling asset protection, public benefits qualification, care coordination, nursing home advocacy and crisis intervention.

“Contrary to what many seniors believe, Medicare does not cover everything,” Mr. Tully said. “It is imperative that seniors, those approaching retirement age and the families of those needing long-term eldercare2care take advantage of the planning opportunities that exist today and implement an asset protection plan. As with any planning, a good way to begin is to seek competent advice from a qualified professional.”

A member of the Suffolk County and New York State Bar Associations, Mr. Tully is certified as an elder law attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation and concentrates his law practice on life care planning, elder law, estate planning, Medicaid benefits and asset protection. He has received accreditation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to represent and assist veterans and their spouses in the preparation, presentation and prosecution of claims for benefits, including the Aide and Attendance Pension.

In 2004, he founded the ElderCare Resource Center, Inc. (www.eldercareresourcecenter.info), whose mission is to be the community resource for support, answers and expertise in regard to advance planning and informed decision-making about present and future long-term healthcare. The Suffolk Nassau Regional Business Partnership voted the ElderCare Resource Center as Educational Business of the Year in 2005.

Phil Ochs was an American troubadour who passionately believed that he and his music could help change the world. Many of his songs became anthems for the anti-war movement during the turbulent 1960s, and his music continues to influence and inspire songwriters today – 40 years after his death. “The Folk Music Society of Huntington was pleased to join with the Cinema Arts Centre in 2011 in co-presenting two screenings of the documentary Phil Ochs: SonnyOchs-by-JayneTouheyThere But For Fortune, during which Sonny Ochs, Phil’s sister, shared some thoughts on her brother and on the film,” says Michael Kornfeld, the nonprofit membership organization’s president.

“Since 1983, Sonny has been producing Phil Ochs Song Nights that feature talented artists who perform both Phil’s songs and their own to show that the art of topical songwriting is still alive and well,” he continues. “FMSH has presented a couple of these and is delighted to welcome Sonny Ochs back to host another one.”

Performing on March 5 will be Greg Greenway and Pat Wictor of the folk harmony trio Brother Sun, along with Kim & Reggie Harris, Colleen Kattau and Sharon Katz.

David Jacobs-Strain Performs in Huntington, March 17, 2016

David Jacobs-Strain, a consummate fingerstyle and slide guitarist and song poet from Oregon, will be the featured performer during the Folk Music Society of Huntington’s monthly Hard Luck Café series at the Cinema Arts Centre (423 Park Avenue, Huntington) on Thursday, March 17, 2016.  The 8:30 p.m. concert in the Cinema’s Sky Room will be preceded by an open mic at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are  $15 ($10 for Cinema Arts Centre and FMSH members).  For more information, visit www.fmsh.org or call (631) 425-2925.

DavidJScredit_TaraLaidlaw323web

Jacobs-Strain brings an old-school sensibility to a new generation of blues and roots music. Although he plays in the blues tradition, he isn’t from it.  In his solo performances, you’ll hear echoes of Skip James, Charlie Patton and Tommy Johnson and, perhaps, a song by Fred McDowell or Robert Johnson.  But Jacobs-Strain is a modern roots musician, singer and songwriter. “I come from the language of the country blues,” he notes, “but it’s important not to silence other influences.”

Jacobs-Strain is known for his virtuosity and spirit of emotional abandon; his live shows move from DavidJScreditMichaelJames0812webhumorous, subversive blues to delicate balladry, and then swing back to swampy rock and roll. It’s a range that ties him to his own generation and to guitar-slinger troubadours like Johnson and Jackson Browne. Says Jacobs-Strain: “I try to make art that you can dance to, but I love that darker place where, in my mind, Skip James, Nick Drake and, maybe, Elliot Smith blur together… I’m fascinated by the way that rural blues inscribes movement and transience. The music that frees a singer keeps them on the run; there’s a crossroads where a thing can be enchanting but dangerous; damaging but beautiful.”

Jacobs-Strain grew up in Eugene, Oregon, in a community that was centered on cultural change and environmentalism. He sees a distinct connection between the principles embodied in his upbringing and the democracy of the blues. “I’m really into handmade culture and real people making real music,” he notes. “The voice. One guitar. Even at their simplest, the blues have always been a vehicle for expressing your own situation – whether as an individual or a community. There’s such power in that.”

Jacobs-Strain began playing on street corners and at farmers’ markets as a teenager and bought his first guitar with the quarters he saved up. Before he dropped out of Stanford to play full-time, he had already appeared at festivals across the country, and was often billed as a blues prodigy – but he had to fight to avoid being a novelty act. “I wanted to tell new stories; it just wasn’t enough to relive the feelings in other people’s music,” he recalls.

David Jacobs-Strain has appeared at festivals from British Columbia to Australia – including such notable ones as Bumbershoot, Merlefest, Philadelphia Folk Festival and Telluride Blues Festival. He’s also taught at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch and has previously performed for the Folk Music Society of Huntington’s First Saturday Concerts series.

Scam call reported to TheHuntingtonian.com. It happened two times today. Both times, the voice is a Hindu male with a British accent, speaking English from a script. The first call was at noon. The scammer says, “I am calling to inform you that you are the subject of an enforcement…” I ended the call. He called again at 11:33 PM, awakening me and my wife. I did not answer the phone. I got his full message and phone number. I will report the call today to my telephone company. I will move my phone to another area of the house for awhile and stop answering it.

WHAT THE IRS/TREASURY SAYS:

Per the IRS-Based on the 90,000 complaints that TIGTA has received through its telephone hotline, to date, TIGTA has identified approximately 1,100 victims who have lost an estimated $5 million from these scams.

“There are clear warning signs about these scams, which continue at high levels throughout the nation,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “Taxpayers should remember their first contact with the IRS will not be a call from out of the blue, but through official correspondence sent through the mail. A big red flag for these scams are angry, threatening calls from people who say they are from the IRS and urging immediate payment. This is not how we operate. People should hang up immediately and contact TIGTA or the IRS.”

Additionally, it is important for taxpayers to know that the IRS:

  • Never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone.
  • Never insists that taxpayers use a specific payment method to pay tax obligations
  • Never requests immediate payment over the telephone and will not take enforcement action immediately following a phone conversation. Taxpayers usually receive prior notification of IRS enforcement action involving IRS tax liens or levies.

Potential phone scam victims may be told that they owe money that must be paid immediately to the IRS or they are entitled to big refunds. When unsuccessful the first time, sometimes phone scammers call back trying a new strategy.

SCPD Advice on Telephone Scams

Residents Warned of Telephone Scam

Scammers pretend to be IRS employees looking for unpaid taxes

The Suffolk County Police Department is warning residents of a telephone scam during which scammers TH_SCPDpretend to be Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees looking for unpaid taxes.

During a recent incident in Suffolk County, a resident received four calls during the course of two days with a recorded message, purported to be from the IRS, asking the resident contact a number provided on the message.  Upon calling the number, the resident was connected to a man who stated that the caller was the subject of a lawsuit for failing to pay taxes and certain personal identifying information was needed to stop the lawsuit from going forward.  Additionally, the man stated a fee needed to be paid to stop the lawsuit.

Members of the public are advised that these are scam tactics.  The IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment, nor call about taxes owed without first having mailed a bill.
  • Demand that taxes be paid without giving a taxpayer the opportunity to question or appeal the amount  owed.
  • Require you to use a specific payment method, such as a prepaid debit card.
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  • Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement enact an arrest for non-payment.

The Suffolk County Police Department advises residents not to give out any personal information during the call.  If you feel that you have been a victim of this scam, you are advised to call 911 to report the incident to police.

This mission is achieved through the thoughtful preservation, interpretation and enhancement of the Eagle’s Nest estate as an informal educational facility. Many exhibition and program themes focus upon Long Island’s Gold Coast Era. Programs also concentrate on William K. Vanderbilt II’s desire that his marine, natural history and ethnographic collections promote appreciation and understanding of the marvelous diversity of life, other cultures, and scientific knowledge. Planetarium programming, more specifically, focuses on scientific knowledge and seeks to capture Mr. Vanderbilt’s sense of adventure and exploration through state-of-the-art entertainment.
