The Greenlawn Fire Department responded to a fire in a detached garage to the rear of a residence on Smith Street, November 16 at 5:48 p.m. Upon arrival, units encountered heavy fire in the garage which was reportedly utilized as an artist’s studio and storage. First due crews made an aggressive attack on the fire while protecting a neighboring property. There was an extended overhaul operation, and the fire was declared under control at 7:23 p.m.
About 50 firefighters and EMS personnel were on the scene with four trucks and three ambulances, under the direction of Chief Mike Bellis supported by Assistant Chiefs Angelo Santomauro and Pete Miller. The Centerport Fire Department assisted with an engine to the scene, and the Dix Hills Fire Department and Huntington Community First Aid Squad provided standby coverage during the alarm. Cyanide Response Team Paramedics from East Northport FD, Dix Hills FD and Commack Ambulance were also on the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Huntington Fire Marshal and Suffolk Police Arson Squad. There were no injuries reported.
