Vanderbilt Plans Children’s Creative Workshops for Pre-K and Grades K-3 During February Break

When school is out for the February 15-19 winter break, children can have creative fun in workshops at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum. Programs are held in the Education Center, located at the museum, 180 Little Neck Road, Centerport, N.Y. Reservations are required. Please call (631) 854-5539.

Grades K-3 workshops

 

Monday, February 15 – 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Mixed Media Self-Portrait

$20 members/$25 non-members

 

Students visit the Vanderbilt mansion galleries, then use a variety of materials to create self-portraits inspired by those that grace the walls of Mr. Vanderbilt’s summer home. Students will view a portrait of George Washington, on display for Presidents Day.

 

Tuesday, February 16 – 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Polar Animal Clay Figure and Diorama

$20 members/$25 non-members

 

Students visit the wildlife dioramas and bird collection, examine teeth, antlers, skins, then create a clay sculpture and habitat of a polar animal.

 

Preschool workshop

(Children ages 3 and 4, with adult)

 

Thursday, February 18 – 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Winter Wonderland Snow Globe

$15 members/$20 non-members

 

Children visit the wildlife dioramas, hear a story, and make a wintry snow globe with a favorite polar animal.

Hours – Museum and Mansion

Through April 12: Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, 12:00 – 4:00. (Planetarium is open Friday and Saturday nights.) Open additional days during school holidays. See website for details. The Museum and Mansion are closed Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

 

Hours – Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium

Through April 12: Daytime shows Tuesday at 2:00 and Saturday and Sunday at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00. Evening shows on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 and 9:00. (The Planetarium is open on Friday and Saturday nights, but the Mansion, Museum and Estate grounds are closed.) The Planetarium is closed Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

 

Observatory

Year-round viewing of the night sky (weather permitting), Friday only, 9:00-10:00 (free with show ticket; $3.00 without show ticket)
